Wrap Around Sunglasses
If you are a frequent golfer like I am I have learned that it is really important to consistently wear sunglasses for several reasons. The obvious one is to protect your eyes from ultraviolet light - UVA and UVB. Your sunglasses need to be labeled 100% UVA and UVB protection. UV light can enter through the sides of sunglasses as well causing cataracts and damage to our retinas. Wrap around frames provide protection from sunlight coming in from the sides of your glasses. Sunglasses that provide protection from the top and sides are called wrap around sunglasses.
Blue Blocker Sunglasses
On a more serious note, my father has lost much of his central vision due to an eye disease called macular degeneration. This means that I am at high risk for developing it as well.
One of the main risk factors for this eye disease is frequent and regular exposure to the sun and to blue light. Blue light is just that - it is the light that gives the sky the blue color. If you'd like to learn more about this eye disease and the effects of the sun and blue light on the eyes go to: Sun Glasses and Macular Degeneration The neat thing for me is that the color lenses that offer the best protection from blue light are tinted orange, red/orange, yellow or amber. These tints happen to be the best for golf as well.
Best Golf Sunglasses
I own a couple of different pairs of sunglasses. My Oakley sunglasses have different colored lenses that can be changed out. Of course it goes without saying that you need sunglasses that provide 100% UVA and UVB protection.A polycarbonate lens provides the safest lens protection for any one who plays a ball sport. What I find is that glasses with an amber/orange/yellow lens are the best sunglasses for golf. Glare reduction and contrast enhancement are two of the main benefits. Which means I can see, track and find my ball easier when I wear them. The lenses are not too dark and the yellow filter really makes the white ball stand out - especially when the ball goes off the fairway. Of course I wouldn't know about that :)
