Testing Used Golf Cart Batteries

Also you can check the batteries yourself with a battery hydrometer to see if they are weak. Two important reminders:

testing used golf cart batteries

1. Be sure the batteries are fully charged or you will get an inaccurate reading.

2. Do not perform this specific gravity test right after adding distilled water to the cells.

The battery hydrometer has 3 colored sections - green, white and red. The green indicator means that the batteries are strong, white means they are OK, and red means a very weak battery.

Always wear protective clothing, gloves, and eye wear when working with lead acid batteries. Remove the cell caps. You will need to individually test each cell.

Replacing with a Single Used Battery

Ideally, when it comes time to replace your golf cart batteries, you want to replace them all with new ones.

If you find that one of your batteries has gone bad, do not replace with one new battery. If you do, the weaker batteries will take power from the new battery to equalize the rest of the set and the new battery is drained.

You can consider replacing the entire pack of batteries with used batteries if they are all about the same age and usage level.

Terry from Thermoil.com shares with Golf Carts Etc. readers what can be done to recondition or rejuvenate weak golf cart batteries.

Golf cart batteries weaken when lead sulfate builds up on the plates.

It forms a hard crust that interferes with the exchange of sulfuric acid going in and out of the plates.

Find out why this happens, how to prevent it and what to do if your batteries are no longer holding or keeping a charge.
